Timeline of the Democracy Movement

1978
Citizens posted big-character posters demanding political reform — a symbolic start of China’s modern democracy movement.
1989
Millions of students and citizens called for democratic reform and were brutally suppressed by the regime, shocking the world.
1998
The first attempt to legally register an opposition party in mainland China. Founders Wang Youcai and Xu Wenli were sentenced to long prison terms.
2002
Dissidents established the party’s overseas headquarters in the U.S., continuing its mission and connecting with the global exile community.
2017
Tiananmen leader Dr. Wang Juntao was elected Chairman of the CDP, advancing institutional development and global outreach.
